PBS’ Frontline/World is airing a great segment tonight on Rekjavik’s music scene entitled Iceland - The Future of Sound, with a site to match. Of course, they mentioned Bjork, and sigur rós, the best band alive, but most of the piece was focused on the Apparat Organ Quartet, at one point following them as they have the brilliant idea of convincing the largest supermarket in Iceland to play their music for a day. While their music played over the speakers, Apparat gave out drinks and questionnaires to slightly stunned-looking shoppers. My favorite part was one of the fellows from Apparat talking about their shared “fondness for the fallability of machines” and their belief “that these faults… can be interesting.”
The site features a notebook with the reporter’s thoughts while producing the report, and a nice, cheesy little walkthrough of Iceland’s music scene with profiles of Sigur Ros, Mum, Gusgus, and a few others.
