Coproduced by NPR and National Geographic, a report today tells the story of four explorers who attempt to find the calving ground of the chiru, a rare Tibetan antelope that in recent decades been poached to endangered status to make shahtoosh scarves, which are such objects of desire that socialites continue to risk jail time to acquire and trade them. This is an incredible story, the kind you don’t expect to hear anymore, about vast uninhabited places, elusive creatures with near-magical properties, and a quest to find them, perhaps for one last time.
