Tom opened up a nice discussion thread on the origin of permalinks, and lots of folks have weighed in. I was one of those who didn’t like the clutter of permalinks, and embarassingly, I never had a reason to turn mine back on (the little + signs you see in between my posts) until a nice guy whose site I just complained about asked for one a month or two ago. Tom also turned on trackbacks, comments, and all the trimmings on this post, so it’s a funny example of how widget-heavy our sites have all become.
