though it hardly seems worthy of debate, a couple more reasons to add to tom’s common sense position that the internet is not shit: like it was designed to, when the phone lines failed two septembers ago, the internet helped all of us in washington and new york tell the rest of the world who was ok, and each other where to go and how to help. on a more personal note, it’s created completely new career opportunities for thousands of people like me, and some of us even managed to hold on to those jobs and are still working every day to make the internet better and more useful, rather than, say, sitting around drafting manifestos. These folks actually wrote that people should “chant it from the rooftops,” which verges on self-parody. Last I checked, there were more important things to get worked up about. People still need jobs, health care, housing, and basic human rights, and as long as the internet continues to be a way to mobilize and publicize the issues, I’d say it’s pretty worthwhile.
