Well, now that everyone in DC knows my home wireless network is wide open, feel free to come on down and use it next time you’re in Adams-Morgan. Maybe I need to get unlisted…

“It really is a pain to switch back and forth…” Do I sound like a fool or what? I tried to tell him all this cool stuff about flaws in WEP security, using VPNs, and about the free WiFi movement, but I still get busted saying something uninformed like the idiot I am. But I am grateful to Mike Musgrove for the quotes - no press is bad press, and he’s one of the best tech reporters in the city.

In related news, Tom also illustrates how uncool I am by revealing the newest way cool bloggers can out-cool the rest of us: your Friendster user ID, which is assigned in the order you joined. Mine is something like 1 million, 232 thousand, which means I am way late to the party. Or maybe I’m so cool I couldn’t be bothered to join until now (I guess I could pretend that was true if someone had invited me earlier).

I rib Tom on this totally out of love: if there weren’t a Plasticbag, there may not have been a shey.net. And his site is a model of choosing the good of self-publishing over the devil of self-aggrandizement, which is fed like hell by Friendster: one thing you realize quickly on the site, if you hadn’t before, is that people love to write about themselves, and to upload flatteringly self-deprecating photos. Today, seeing I had several new friends to check in on, I couldn’t: Friendster was at critical mass today, completely overloaded, a victim of its own success. But I’m having a vision now of Star-Bellied Sneetches, and wondering if the line to get out of Friendster might soon start looking as long as the line to get in.

So, I forgot to mention… my story ran as a sidebar to a larger post story on WiFi, which Cory lambasts here: WashPo embarasses itself with hysterical WiFi FUD article. My discomfort grows ever more acute… all very funny.
