If yesterday’s post freaked you out, the Post did a nice thing for everyone the other day, and published this article about safety precations you can take if you’re set on still eating beef, such as buying organic, or grinding oneself (abstaining is also discussed). The article points out that the amount of cooking has no effect on BSE’s transmission (unlike with bacteria like E. coli), and the safest cuts would be those farthest from the spinal cord (the article recommends to “stay clear of… porterhouse and T-bone steaks, standing rib roast and bone-in prime, chuck or round steaks,” e.g., pretty much most ground beef).
Ten years ago, I’d have pointed you to Diet for a New America and said it serves you right if you don’t go vegan, but I guess I’m nicer these days… and worth admitting, no longer a vegetarian myself. Though I’d still recommend John Robbin’s book.
