Remember that New Yorker article last year about producer Roy Lee? This is one of the guys who also created ScriptTracker, changing the way studios read and buy scripts, and who, these days, “watches videos of every Asian movie ever made, picks the biggest hits, and then, on behalf of their Asian distributors, sells the ‘remake rights.’” In the article, he successfully pitched a remake of the Japanese hit “Ju-On” to Sam Raimi after screening a tape of it to him and Lee’s friend Nathan Kahane.

As the lights dimmed, Lee whispered to Kahane, “If it stinks, remember, I haven’t seen it before.”

“If it stinks, your reputation is ruined.”

The movie ended up scaring the bejeezus out of Raimi and closing the deal… follow-up news item today, filming has begun on Takashi Shimizu’s “Ju-On” remake, “The Grudge,” with an American cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar. Sam Raimi’s still producing, and Lee and Kahane share the executive producer credits.

Other Ju-On trivia… Chiaki Kuriyama, who stole “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” as Go Go Yubari, starred in the original Ju-On, as well as the infamous “Battle Royale,” written up here a long time ago (“today, i’d like you guys to kill each other”).
