This is nothing from nothing, but we were watching this CBS News clip (or watch in RealPlayer) which ends with Schwarzenegger paying his respects to President Reagan, and it seems Arnold makes the sign of the cross from right to left, as they do in the Greek Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic churches, rather than from left to right as do most American Catholics, like his wife, Maria Shriver, also signing in the video. Is this an Austrian thing? Seriously, we want to know.
Reputedly, Arnold was raised in a strict Catholic household, but search for Schwarzenegger + Catholic sometime if you’d like to see what some professed (as in, keep your filters on) Catholic writers on the web have been saying about the path he’s taken since, both as bodybuilder and gubernator. He and Kerry have both been somewhat polarizing figures, for very different reasons I am sure (the word “grope” comes to mind), when their actions or political views have not matched those espoused by the Vatican. There was a good essay by Hertzberg in last week’s New Yorker that dealt with this topic as well… really putting in prespective how unusual a position a Catholic candidate for President with his own ideas may find himself these days. Just wait until it’s Arnold’s turn (oh yes, that amendment will pass: America loves its Action Figure Presidents, if this week’s tributes aren’t proof enough).
