Caught on a Rio de Janeiro satellite TV channel down at a local Brazilian restaurant (Grill from Ipanema!) this evening: turns out today, May 3, was World Press Freedom Day. You might not know it from any U.S. newscasts here, despite the fact that Tom Brokaw delivered a memorial tribute here in Washington at the Freedom Forum, and the fact that, according to the AP, last year was the deadliest year for journalists covering conflicts since World War II. Thankfully, we have Google News to see all the coverage this has gotten elsewhere.

This was the same day the AP reported that CBS News held the Iraq prison abuse story for two weeks, at the request of the U.S. military. See, part of freedom is the choice to delay a bombshell story indefinitely, until the New Yorker’s about to run it anyway.
