Salon introduces the Minibosses with the line, “and now for something completely different,” but in reality, looks like the Minibosses do exactly the same thing as The Advantage (mentioned here & covered in the NY Times last week): play music from old video games. Later in the article, they mention more bands that do the same thing, with names like the NESkimos and the OneUp Mushrooms. I don’t know what’s going on, besides just a goofy trend, but maybe, like hippies and ravers did before them, gamers are bringing back childhood comforts to deal with uncertain times. As long as we don’t break out the pacifiers again, I’ll be happy.
